About Us

For those who are not familiar with the history of the center, you will be surprised to learn that Early Challenges Child Care grew from a family entertainment center. Think Chucky Cheese — only better. We were crazy busy every weekend and wanted to find a great use for our child-oriented facility during the week. Early Challenges was born!

Our vision when opening our family entertainment center and continuing with the child care center was to provide support to the children and families of the New River Valley. We are very excited to be in our 18th year of business doing just that! From our family to yours, we are thankful to serve you and appreciate all of your support for the children at Early Challenges.

We are located at 364 Arbor Drive in Christiansburg, VA, behind the shopping center. A map can be found on our Contact Us page.

Administrative Team & Staff

All our teachers have to be state certified. Many of them have teaching experience and are continuing to work on their training and professional development. Our support staff are carefully selected because of their love for children and the professionalism in the classroom.

Lorna, Co-Director: “I have worked in public education for 19 years and have loved and enjoyed all of the children with whom I have worked. I loved teaching skiing and swimming to people of all ages before becoming a teacher and school administrator. I have a wonderful daughter who is growing up too quickly and I appreciate all of you sharing your young children and babies with me as I miss the baby and toddler stages. I am thrilled and blessed to have this opportunity to work with all of the families, children, and staff at Early Challenges.”

Cathy, Co-Director: “Caring for children has been my passion since the early age of eleven when I began babysitting.  I ran a home-based child care for approximately six years before becoming a pre-school teacher’s aide in the school system for two years. I then became the school nurse and was in the position for sixteen years before making the decision to go back into running my home-based child care for another 4 years. Then I moved to the Blacksburg area to be with my son Andy after losing my beautiful daughter Angela. I feel as though the reason that I pour my heart and soul into the children here at the center is because after losing three of my precious children, I have a lot of love that I want to shower over each child that I come into contact with. I am honored to be the Director and be part of this amazing team!”

Lisa, Accounts Administrator: “I have been working in education for as long as I can remember. I was with Radford University for 14 years, then taught middle and high school with Community Christian and Pathway Christian Academies. I served on the Speaker’s Bureau while at RU, and have taught senior citizens through the Elderhostels Program. When I came to Early Challenges in June 2012, I started as an assistant teacher, then co-lead in the Raindrops classroom, and then moved to the Administration team. While I am no longer in the classroom, I still have the joy of seeing the kids each day and sharing in their lives. I love watching them grow and learn.”
